Black Hole Formation via Hypercritical Accretion during Common Envelope Evolution

چکیده

Neutron stars inspiralling into a stellar envelope can accrete at rates vastly exceeding the Eddington limit if the flow develops pressures high enough to allow neutrinos to radiate the released gravitational energy. It has been suggested that this hypercritical mode of accretion leads inevitably to the formation of stellar mass black holes during common envelope evolution. We study the hydrodynamics of this flow at large radii (R ≫ Rns), and show that for low Mach number flows, in two dimensions, modest density gradients in the stellar envelope suffice to produce a hot, advection dominated accretion disk around the accreting object. The formation of outflows from such a disk is highly probable, and we discuss the impact of the resultant mass loss and feedback of energy into the envelope for the survival of the neutron star. Unless outflows are weaker than those inferred for well observed accreting systems, we argue that in most cases insufficient accretion occurs to force collapse to a black hole before the envelope has been ejected. This conclusions is of interest for black hole formation in general, for some models of gamma ray bursts, and for predictions of the event rate in future LIGO observations. Hypercritical Advection Dominated Accretion Flow

In this note we study the accretion disc that arises in hypercritical accretion of Ṁ ∼ 10 MEdd onto a neutron star while it is in common envelope evolution with a massive companion. Such a study was carried out by Chevalier (1996), who had earlier suggested that the neutron star would go into a black hole in common envelope evolution. In his later study he found that the accretion could possibl...

Bounds on Expected Black Hole Spins in Inspiraling Binaries

As a first step towards understanding the angular momentum evolutionary history of black holes in merging black-hole/neutron-star binaries, we perform population synthesis calculations to track the distribution of accretion histories of compact objects in such binaries. We find that there are three distinct processes can possibly contribute to the black-hole spin magnitude: a birth spin for the...

The Dynamics and Outcomes of Rapid Infall onto Neutron Stars

We present an extensive study of accretion onto neutron stars in which the velocity of the neutron star and structure of the surrounding medium is such that the Bondi-Hoyle accretion exceeds 10M⊙ y . Two types of initial conditions are considered for a range of entropies and chemical compositions: an atmosphere in pressure equilibrium above the neutron star, and a freely falling inflow of matte...

On Companion-induced Off-center Supernova-like Explosions

We suggest that a neutron star with a strong magnetic field, spiraling into the envelope of a companion star, can generate a “companion induced SN-like off-center explosion”. The strongly magnetized neutron star (“magnetar”) is born in a supernova explosion before entering into an expanding envelope of a supergiant companion. If the neutron star collapses into a black hole via the hypercritical...

Evolution of Neutron-star, Carbon-oxygen White-dwarf Binaries

We consider the evolution of neutron-star (ns), carbon-oxygen white-dwarf (co) binaries, using both the Bethe & Brown (1998) schematic analytic evolutions and the Portegies Zwart & Yungelson (1998) numerical population syntheses. The scenario in which the circular neutron-star, carbon-oxygen white-dwarf binaries (ns, co)c have gone through common envelope evolution is considered. In conventiona...
